Lead Medical Coding Specialist
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under indirect supervision, the Lead, Medical Coding Specialist will lead, train, coordinate, and review the work of assigned coders and/or others who need assistance, advice, instruction, training and in-service education in coding and abstracting. Should be proactive and can take ownership of projects and provide guidance to others. This person should be confident working independently, comfortable making technical decisions, and able to answer questions without needing constant direction.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Review Medical Records to identify diagnoses/procedures.

Monitor coding operations with respect to workflows and regular reporting: evaluate workflows for maximum efficiencies and problem solve work queue issues when accounts/charges are not flowing properly, making recommendations as necessary.

Perform research, run various reports and assist with general coding as needed and as requested.

Complete and support special coding projects that include but not limited to peer reviews and payer reviews

Identify coding and payer policy reimbursement deficiencies - both clinical and code related

Partner with multiple internal cross-functional teams and successfully manage multiple product projects simultaneously.

Complete position responsibilities within the appropriate time frame while adhering to quality standards

Performs other duties as assigned

Serves as an expert resource for the coders and others with coding questions and inquiries.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Certified coder designation/ certification by AAPC or AHIMA
-
Bachelor's degree in relevant field is preferred
-
3+ years professional coding experience with current certification including International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Coding Procedure Terminology (CPT) and HCPCS coding.

2+ years' experience in Revenue Cycle

Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Problem-solving, ability to adapt, flexibility in approaches to accomplishing tasks, and ability to independently arrive at creative solutions to problems

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, particularly the ability to convey technical information in an accessible and understandable manner

Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with individuals from various disciplines
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Understanding of ICD10 CM coding, revenue cycle, and payment structures

Adhere to all HIPAA, PHI safety standards while working with both paper and electronic forms of data and within multiple EMR systems

Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and private-payer regulations

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and solid attention to detail

Able consistently work with multiple projects and priorities and keenly eye for detail

Must be able to collaboratively work with and communicate professionally with internal and external departments
