DIRECTOR, ENGINEERING SERVICES

POSITION SUMMARY (other duties may be assigned)

The Director of Engineering leads multiple service verticals within the Proconex Process Systems & Solutions business unit. As a key organizational leader, the Director of Engineering Services is responsible for setting and executing strategies for long-term growth, while overseeing the performance and delivery of the capital engineering group.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical leadership with a focus on leveraging tools and technology to improve operational effectiveness. They will drive collaboration between Sales, Business Development, and Operations, Champion Quality in Execution, Engage in Strategic Cross Functional Workforce Planning, and Manage Resource Capacity for Project Delivery.

Success in this role requires exceptional communication skills, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the courage to make bold, balanced decisions that align business goals with team growth. Talent and leadership development and succession planning are essential priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Capital Project Delivery

  • Ensure successful execution of Proconex capital engineering projects.
  • Champion technical excellence and thought leadership to deliver best-in-class solutions.
  • Optimize and enforce quality management systems across engineering processes.
  • Anticipate project risks and proactively resolve issues with internal teams and customer stakeholders.
  • Maximize project financial performance while optimizing engineering resource utilization.

Customer Support & Business Development

  • Act as a strategic partner to customers through thought leadership, direct support, and mentoring.
  • Build strong customer relationships to gather feedback, manage expectations, and identify growth opportunities.
  • Support sales efforts by engaging in customer meetings, understanding needs, and helping shape winning proposals.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative offerings across automation and digital solutions.
  • Respond to internal client requests efficiently, based on priority and impact.
  • Support customer-focused marketing and engagement initiatives.

Resource Management

  • Lead staffing strategy across engineering teams, identifying underutilization and balancing workloads.
  • Monitor team capacity in real time, resolve resource constraints, and address gaps through delegation or direct action.
  • Deliver clear resource reports, highlighting trends, availability, and future needs.
  • Collaborate with Talent to source contingent resources and maintain a robust contractor roster.

Financial Oversight

  • Own and manage engineering P&L performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
  • Develop and maintain financial reporting tools that support operational decision-making.

Standards & Process Improvement

  • Develop and enhance standards, tools, and best practices for project execution and documentation.
  • Drive operational efficiency through scalable processes and technologies.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and uncompromising quality.

Team Leadership & Administration

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and career development support to engineering staff and managers.
  • Lead recruitment, hiring, and onboarding activities.
  • Conduct performance reviews and guide professional growth plans.
  • Manage timesheets, expense approvals, and internal communications.
  • Support internal branding and recognition of the engineering team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Proconex, the Emerson Impact Partner Network, and Emerson Engineering Centers to deliver seamless, integrated customer solutions.

 JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • EXPERIENCE: 
    • 15 years demonstrated experience, including 5 years in a leadership role with direct reports managing resource demand, capacity, overages, budgets, and team member allocation.
    • Have worked with technical or engineering disciplines, design and project management resources.
    • Preferable experience within the industrial automation space (understands the SDLC of process automation/industrial software projects).
  • SKILLS:
    • Ability to manage functional direct reports as well as overseeing indirect program teams to ensure cross-functional alignment of priorities (e.g. Sales/Business Development, Project Management, Finance) to achieve business goals. 
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to influence while creating and maintaining positive working relationships with leadership, peers, subordinates, indirect staff, and customers. 
  • EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s Degree in Management, Engineering, or Sciences (or equivalent).
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Typical working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in a typical office setting, with a minimum of 3 days in the office.
