Nestled in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood on a nine-acre campus, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a center of excellence in providing a continuum of care. This includes the Frank Residences, offering luxurious assisted living and memory care services; the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, featuring long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and an acute psychiatric unit specialized in mental healthcare for older adults over age 55; and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.
Grounded in the Jewish values of dignity, compassion, and community, the San Francisco Campus for Jewish Living, fondly referred to in the past as "the Jewish Home," was founded in 1871. Today, 150 years later, it continues to build upon its legacy of enriching the lives of older adults.
Position Overview:
The AGPH Recreation Specialist facilitates therapeutic group and individual programs and communicates with patients, families, surrogates, conservators, nurses, physicians, and other health team members. The AGPH Recreation Specialist works in conjunction with all members of the interdisciplinary team to provide active treatment to help accomplish patient goals. The AGPH Recreation Specialist assists with the completion of mandatory documentation as needed. The AGPH Recreation Specialist works under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy.
Essential Functions:
- Assessment / Reassessment: Assures that an initial activity assessment and admission note are completed within 72 hours of admission of patients under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy. Assures that a progress note is completed, noting progress toward patient treatment goals, changes in symptoms/ behaviors, and changes in condition at least weekly.
- Treatment Planning: Assures that the treatment plan is multidisciplinary and includes individualized therapeutic interventions within 72 hours of admission and updates goals and interventions as needed under the direction of the Director of Recreation Therapy.
- Interdisciplinary Team (IDT): Actively communicates with the IDT to foster active treatment under the direction of the Director of Recreation Therapy. In the absence of the Director of Recreation Therapy attends the IDT meeting and reports upon patient observations, behaviors, and symptoms as they relate to the patient’s treatment plan.
- Communication: Provides information about patients to the Director of Recreation Therapy verbally and/ or in writing, utilizing the Recreation Therapy Treatment Note.
- Documentation: Maintains accurate documentation under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy, including but not limited to:
- Antecedents to inappropriate behaviors, changes in cognition / physical status, etc. and reports to licensed nurse and/or physician for further review and possible change in treatment, etc.
- Admission assessments & admission notes.
- Progress notes at least weekly.
- Individual and group participation treatment notes.
- Treatment plan.
- Therapeutic Treatment/ Relationship: Provides group and one-on-one visits on a pre-scheduled and as-needed basis, including but not limited to:
- Leads group or individualized treatment programs, including, but not limited to: expressive arts therapies, coping skills, recreational, social, spiritual, educational, leisure skills, etc.
- Easily connects with all patients regardless of symptoms/ behaviors in a therapeutic manner to promote the patient’s highest level of wellness.
- Ensures that all patients are treated with dignity and respect.
- Can maintain an emotionally and physically safe space in the milieu with the ability to set limits in a therapeutic manner.
- Provides supportive counseling, mental health education, stress management, and coping skills education in the group or 1:1 treatments.
- Educates patients (or patient support) on the treatment plan and the role of meaningful activity in wellness.
- Notification: Notifies the Director of Recreation Therapy, charge nurse, and/or IDT of new behavior problems promptly.
- Completes in-services as assigned.
- Works with the recreation therapist to maintain a daily/monthly activity calendar.
- Supports volunteers or interns working in the AGPH.
- Accounts for all sharps, equipment, and supplies at the end of each group.
- Secures and cleans all appropriate materials in a locked area at the end of each group session.
- Understands and follows all rules, guidelines, and protocols outlined in the SFCJL JHRC Employee Handbook.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Recreation Therapy.
Qualifications:
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or a
- Master’s degree preferred in Music, art, or drama therapy; or
- Bachelor’s degree with certification in music, art, or drama therapy
- Two years of experience working in the field of geriatrics preferred.
- A minimum of one year of experience working in an acute psychiatric hospital is preferred.
- CPI – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (completed within 3-6 months of start date).
- Experiencein planning and implementing individual and group therapeutic activities.
- Ability to collaborate with others.
- Ability to interact effectively with patients, families/responsible person, interdisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations governing acute psychiatric hospital and mental health.
- Ability to read, write and speak English.
- Desire to work with older people with mental health diagnoses.
- Ability to generate enthusiasm and cooperation from others.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when necessary.
- Ability to understand and respond appropriately to cultural diversity.
- Ability, under the direction of the Director of Recreation Therapy, to complete all mandated documentation promptly.
- Document appropriately in the medical record.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift, push, and pull a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds.
- Ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry
- Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles over time without fatigue
- Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods
- Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, sit, and reach
- Fine motor skills
- Good visual and auditory acuity
