Sr. Manager of Data

About the Senior Manager of Data Position: 

Stord is looking for a Senior Manager of Data to join the data team. This role will report to the Director of SRE and oversee our data pipelines, ETL processes, data analysis and reporting and visualization processes. This person will build and own data pipelines, create in-depth analysis and powerful dashboards for customers, work closely with our Database Reliability Engineering team to optimize and scale our data, work with product and engineering to build machine learning models, and drive the security posture.

This is an opportunity to build upon and accelerate the impact the data team has on Stord’s software offerings and improving operational efficiencies across the business. The Senior Manager of Data will help steer the roadmap, work cross-functionally with product managers, and also strategically align with internal stakeholder needs. This is a high-impact role and you’ll be working with a variety of teams across the company.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and maintain robust database solutions for PostgreSQL and Google BigQuery environments, ensuring data availability and system resilience
  • Identify areas of improvement, and implement optimization of databases to ensure optimal performance and cost efficiency
  • Drive and own data performance optimization, schema design, code review, SQL query tuning
  • Develop self-service, automation tools to successfully enable product engineering to own database operations and reduce the need for direct database access
  • Manage and scale distributed systems like Kafka for event streaming and ElasticSearch for search capabilities
  • Employ comprehensive monitoring to track performance metrics and system health, using data to drive optimizations
  • Collaborate with product engineering to integrate best practices in database usage into the broader architecture
  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures, and definitions for the data dictionary
  • Provide guidance and leadership in database strategy and operations, ensuring alignment with the company’s technological and business needs
  • Influence the selection of appropriate database technologies based on product requirements and ensure high availability
  • Lead a team of analysts, providing actionable feedback and opportunities for career growth
  • Define, develop and track company-wide, standardized KPI dashboards for our Operations, Supplier Relations, Finance, Freight and Engineering teams.
  • Design, implement and maintain BI reporting solutions in our software product offeringsDefine, transform and structure data so that the data is ready for analysis
  • Act as a thought partner for business owners, providing strong analytical recommendations based on a combination of data and broader business context.
  • Create data views for internal and external customers, and own data quality. 
  • Develop a range of analytics products from exploratory data analysis to predictive and prescriptive models, guided by business priorities.
  • Articulate analytical findings in clear and concise deliverables, including presentations, discussions, and visualizations to inform stakeholders and validate business strategy.
  • Accelerate decisions made with data to help direct analysis and client communications
  • Personality geared towards customer obsession and used to taking the lead to drive change

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience in related technical field
  • At least 7+ years of experience in database administration, business intelligence, and data science, Google BigQuery, BI tools, ETL tools, and database schemas
  • Strong background in developing and maintaining real-time and batch data pipelines
  • Proven experience with Kafka, ElasticSearch, Redis, and building/maintaining large-scale ETL/ELT processes
  • Fluency in SQL, Python, and other scripting languages
  • Expertise in automation and monitoring tools, with a strong understanding of infrastructure as code principles
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system problems
  • Effective communication skills, capable of leading discussions and presenting technical details to a varied audience
  • Experience with cloud services, preferably in a Google Cloud or hybrid environment
