The New York Times seeks an Art Director to join our award-winning features print design team in the NYC office on a temporary basis.
The features design team is responsible for the majority of the newspaper’s weekly sections, including Arts & Leisure, Sunday Business, Styles, Science, Book Review and Food. We are looking for a designer with a demonstrated talent for narrative visual storytelling, who is able to conceptualize creative solutions and see them through to publication. The successful candidate will work closely with team leadership, fellow art directors, desk editors and photo editors.
The designer will be a visual storyteller with a command of typography, composition, hierarchy and balance. They will have experience in assigning illustrations and the ability to work effectively under creative direction. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and collaborator. They must be able to prioritize tasks and consistently meet deadlines. This designer will bring their enthusiasm, diplomacy and creative problem-solving to each challenge.
This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities:

Act as both a creative lead and project manager for a variety of projects

Design impactful covers and interior pages, in many cases translating digital projects into organized and thoughtful print presentations

Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills to sell ideas and build consensus

Meet deadlines and manage shifting priorities

Exercise strong editorial judgement attention to detail

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to the Design Director of Features
Basic Qualifications:
-
5+ years of editorial design experience
-
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite
-
A portfolio of work that demonstrates strong typography and layout skills, whether through magazine work, innovative newspaper design or book design

Experience managing projects and meeting deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Experience successfully art-directing visuals for mobile and desktop audiences

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment in a fast-moving workplace

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$124,979.94 - $141,000 USD
