Purpose of the Position:
This role provides effective team member relations and other People & Culture (P&C) services to designated departments. This role will lead performance improvement and corrective action processes, investigate complaints from leaders and team members, and interpret policies and practices to support departmental performance and maintain UMAE’s culture. This position will advise leaders to ensure effective, consistent employment practice delivery.
This role will also foster effective relationships within the P&C department, and across various departments to ensure engagement of relevant stakeholders, and delivery of appropriate people and culture solutions. Position will also review, monitor, and advise on a variety of metrics related to People Operations services.
What you’ll do:
- Manage Employee Relations Activities: Lead processes related to employee relations interventions. Work with department management to create, edit, and administer corrective actions, and document coaching/counseling activities. Liaise with Compliance and departments as it relates to call monitoring violations and corrective action documentation. Guide leaders on employee relations best practices.
- Conduct ER Investigations: Investigate, document, and address potential violations of employment policy as described in the Team Member Handbook (e.g., fraternization, favoritism, discrimination, legal/arrest or criminal activity while employed). Investigate and document potential Title IX violations involving team members, coordinating with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., Title IX Coordinator, Legal, etc.). Liaise as needed with the Legal department to ensure consistent, appropriate application of corrective actions.
- Support Team Member Development: Advise managers and supervisors on team member development initiatives (e.g., individual development plans), leveraging relevant learning and development resources.
- Maintain UMAE Team Member Handbook and Supplements: Maintain the UMAE Team Member Handbook and its supplements, including identifying, analyzing, and processing changes to handbook policies. Ensure consistent application of UMAE’s policies relating to team members in accordance with UMAE’s mission and values, all applicable federal and state regulations, and all accrediting agencies standards and requirements.
- Manage Team Member Separations from UMAE Employment: Approve, administer, and document all involuntary separations. Administer exit interviews to team members voluntarily separating from UMAE. Participate in unemployment hearings. Review exit reports, provide actionable intelligence to People Ops Business Partners.
- Administer Team Member Offboarding: Ensure appropriate documentation is provided to separating employees, that all internal notifications are made to complete separation process and terminate system access, including return of UMAE equipment, and compliance with various state and local regulations.
- Lead People Operations Projects: Oversee various projects to automate manual processes or enhance effectiveness of P&C service delivery; provide on-going feedback on process improvement.
- Support P&C Inbox Management: As needed, support People Operations Specialists to resolve routine inquiries, and coordinate with appropriate subject matter experts across the P&C team on inquiries requiring consultation. Triage requests, ensuring SLAs (Service Level Agreements) are met; document frequently requested services, suggesting those that may benefit from communication or automation.
- Support P&C Engagement Practices: Partner with relevant stakeholders to review and update policies, procedures, and practices to support a best-in-class culture and evolving organizational needs. Identify opportunities to enhance connections between team members and management throughout the team member life cycle, consistent with UMAE’s mission and culture.
- Lead with Care: Lead, coach, and develop team members, fostering a culture of wellness, recognition, and engagement. Meet regularly with direct reports in one-on-one and group settings to provide feedback and cultivate/maintain a positive work culture.

Required Skills/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Four (4) years of experience working in Human Resources, preferably in working in a team member relations capacity.
- Verbal and written English communication skills; ability to interact professionally with all UMAE team members, vendors, and related stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to deescalate and resolve conflicts.
- Ability to work and interact professionally in a diverse and inclusive work environment.
- Strong time management, task management, and organizational skills.
- Strong understanding of HR handbooks, and ability to interpret policies and practices for effective, consistent talent management.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple, competing priorities.
- Knowledge of and adherence to applicable regulations and other compliance requirements.
- Strong proficiency with MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) and other business tools such as project management and process workflow tools (e.g., Monday.com).
Preferred Requirements:
- Advanced degree, in human resources or related field.
- HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, PHR)
- Experience gained from specific Human Resources centers of excellence (e.g., Talent Acquisition, Benefits, Compensation, or Employee Relations.
- Strong knowledge of employment law basics (from perspective of HR professional).
- Ability to guide employees to appropriate self-service tools across UMAE Hub and various resources.
- Experience collaborating across P&C functional areas.
Compliance:
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and carefully follow all applicable state laws and rules, federal and state compliance requirements and regulations including those prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, accrediting agencies, state regulations and internal policies and procedures.
- Effectively communicate compliance requirements to other staff as appropriate and quickly escalate any compliance concerns to the Compliance department.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- This is a full-time remote position.
- Home office set up, quiet place to work, and ability to hard wire into high-speed internet connection.

- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
Anticipated starting salary is based on experience and qualifications.
Compensation Range
$75,400 - $85,000 USD
