Job Summary:

The Credible Messenger is a full-time position.  Credible Messengers are mentors who are responsible for facilitating social emotional learning (SEL) groups and engaging in individual mentoring with middle school students at the Aston Campus.  Credible Messengers possess knowledge of the juvenile justice system and outside referral systems within the State of Pennsylvania, specifically, the Greater Philadelphia Area. 

Credible Messengers must understand family structures such as blended, single-parent, dual-income, and/or grandparents raising grandchildren, etc.  The candidate must be familiar with social service organizations, PA Housing Authority, PA Courts as well as mental health, substance abuse and teen programs.

The Credible Messenger Initiative utilizes a group mentoring component that helps students transform the attitudes and behaviors that can lead to criminal activity and increase a sense of commitment to community. The goal of the program is to reduce disciplinary infractions, improve student’s attitude about school, and improve school climate.

The core components of Credible Messenger Model include:

  • A restorative justice group process where students and families reconnect to their school and school community;
  • A sponsored conflict resolution curriculum facilitated by culturally competent mentors
  • One on one sessions that focus on the goals identified in a student’s individualized development plan


Essential Functions:

  • Facilitates groups utilizing sponsored curriculum
  • Builds a sense of community within the program
  • Supports and implements incentive programs to encourage attendance and engagement
  • program-wide
  • Attends and participates in, as needed, relevant school-wide meetings and events
  • Models appropriate communication skills and provides redirection techniques to address inappropriate behaviors that maintain the dignity of and respect for youth participating in the VFZ movement
  • Assists youth in cultivating positive alternatives to anti-social lifestyles, gang activity, or any activity that is counter-productive to achieving positive educational and life outcomes
  • Complies with confidentiality, licensing, and legal requirements, as well as the school's code of ethics
  • Complies with all program monitoring/reporting criteria as set by the grant terms
  • Performs ongoing parent communication, including workshops and opportunities to receive resources and program information
  • Provides individualized support to families, including, but not limited to navigating other systems (child welfare, education, mental health, housing, etc.) and accessing services from other government and community providers
  • Meets and networks with police, active and inactive gang members, local service agencies, and residents of the surrounding communities to address issues and promotes opportunities that will improve the quality of the environment for the school
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, preferred,
  • 1-3 years’ experience working with parents, guardians, caregivers, and high-needs students, preferred
  • Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check Clearance
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
  • FBI Criminal Background Clearance

Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  • Basic typing abilities, basic computer literacy (Microsoft Suite)
  • Strong communications and presentation skills and ability to speak in front of groups
  • Response to Interventions (RTII)
  • Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)
  • Google Suite
  • Power Point

Demonstrated Ability to:

  • Make deep connections in urban communities, including but not limited to interacting with prospective and active gang members to understand violent activities taking place in the school
  • Manage multiple priorities under changing deadlines
  • mentor students based on a lived experience in crime or criminal activity
  • Work well with others
  • Work independently and collaboratively

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be standing or walking for most of the day
