The Gemini Data Science Team is made up of a group of talented and collaborative data scientists who use a broad range of analytical skills to improve the Gemini product through insights from data. Our work spans a variety of areas, such as developing new evaluation methodologies for model releases, identifying opportunities for product and model quality improvements from different data sources, and tying changes in model quality to customer outcomes. Our toolset is broad and includes large scale data analysis, metric development, experiments, causal inference, predictive modeling, and clustering.

The role

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Data Scientist to join our team. You will be working alongside a multi-faceted world-class team of data scientists, software engineers, product/program managers, and UX researchers to harness different data sources, such as user feedback and model evaluations, for model and product improvements. You will work closely with both technical and non-technical partner teams to bring your suggestions to the finish line and develop new data driven product improvement solutions. This is an exciting opportunity in a fast moving area that requires bringing innovative solutions to an ambiguous space with the potential for large impact.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with engineers and product/program managers to identify opportunities for, design, and assess improvements of data quality and model performance
  • Work with large, complex data sets. Solve difficult, non-routine analysis problems, applying advanced analytical methods as needed
  • Develop LLM model evaluation metrics to measure the performance of Bard’s overall quality and in specific areas
  • Develop quality metrics (heuristic or model based) from log data that help our models and ultimately the product
  • Share/present analysis to relevant stakeholders and organization executives to share insights, influence product direction, and answer questions regarding data quality measurement and model performance
  • Build and prototype analysis pipelines iteratively to provide insights at scale
  • Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of product and model teams

About you

You are passionate about improving the quality products through data analysis. You are excited about diving into a new space and quickly iterating on solutions. You have an excellent understanding of how to pull and combine different datasets, and derive insights from them, drawing on a wide range of statistical/ML tools when appropriate for your analysis.

In order to set you up for success as a Staff Data Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Master's degree (or higher) in Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Operations Research, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • 8 years of work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, coding (e.g., Python, R, SQL), querying databases or statistical analysis, or 6 years of work experience with a PhD degree.
  • Demonstrated success improving ML/AI driven products through data analysis

In addition, the following would be an advantage: 

  • 10 years of work experience using analytics to solve product or business problems, coding (e.g., Python, R, SQL), querying databases or statistical analysis, or 8 years of work experience with a PhD degree.
  • Fluency working with large scale log data 

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $177,000 - $280,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your targeted location during the hiring process.
