Role Overview
ID.me is looking for a highly skilled Staff Software Development Engineer – API and Services to lead the design and development of scalable backend systems and robust public-facing APIs.
As a Staff Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the architecture of our core backend services, optimizing performance, ensuring high reliability, and supporting critical integrations with partners and consumers. This role focuses on building secure, scalable systems that power the digital identity platform used by millions of users.
This position will be based full-time in our Mountain View, CA office.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and develop scalable, secure, and highly available backend services and APIs that support public-facing products and internal systems.
- Design API interfaces that are intuitive, maintainable, and meet security, performance, and reliability standards.
- Lead system design and architecture reviews for cloud-native services and integration with external data sources, ensuring alignment with business goals.
- Collaborate with Product, Security, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver end-to-end solutions that support a wide range of use cases.
- Optimize SQL and NoSQL data stores for high-throughput, low-latency operations in a cloud-native environment.
- Drive adoption of best practices in API versioning, documentation, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
- Implement authentication, authorization, and other security protocols for public APIs to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
- Stay up-to-date with backend technologies, developer experience trends, and innovations in cloud infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 8+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on backend systems and API development.
- Experience having an identity background
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven expertise in designing and maintaining large-scale, public-facing RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Strong SQL skills and hands-on experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL).
- Deep understanding of cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go.
- Experience with API gateway technologies (e.g., Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway) and service meshes.
- Familiarity with distributed systems concepts, asynchronous processing, and event-driven architecture (Kafka, SNS/SQS).
- Experience working with identity, authentication, or access management systems is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a track record of high-impact contributions in fast-paced, agile environments.
- Prior experience in highly regulated industries (e.g., government, finance, healthcare) is a bonus.
- Contributions to open-source backend tools or published technical writing on scalable backend architecture.
The annual base salary listed does not include a company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity and benefits which will be determined based on experience, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location and role.

$217,565 - $260,000 USD
