Sr. Engineer, Geartrain Development
We are looking for a hands-on, precision-focused Sr. Engineer - Geartrain Development to support the validation and quality assurance of high-performance gear components. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in gear measurement and inspection, including gear geometry, functional testing, and surface roughness evaluation. The role requires deep familiarity with Gear Measuring Machines (GMM), Roll testers, and surface roughness tools such as Klingelnberg, Gleason, Mahr or equivalent systems. This is not a traditional QA role. Instead, it focuses on deep gear-specific analysis, connecting measured gear attributes to NVH, durability, and test outcomes. This position will help form the foundation of a broader Lucid Geartrain Lab in Arizona APDC, supporting advanced metrology, gear-only testing (including CCT), and correlation work across design, supplier, and test teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the strategic development of a Geartrain Engineering Lab in Arizona, including test infrastructure, workflows, and local capability building.
- Support design validation (DV/PV) through detailed correlation studies between gear measurements and system-level test outcomes (e.g., dyno variability).
- Perform comprehensive gear inspection using CNC Gear Measuring Machines (e.g., Klingelnberg, Gleason or Zeiss), assessing profile, lead, pitch, runout, and other dimensional attributes.
- Operate and interpret results from single-flank and double-flank roll testers to evaluate gear meshing characteristics, rolling noise, and transmission error.
- Conduct surface roughness measurements of gear tooth flanks and roots using instruments such as Klingelnberg or equivalent profilometers.
- Create and refine gear inspection programs, gage plans, and fixtures for lab and production settings.
- Interpret detailed engineering drawings, GD&T, and ISO /AGMA standards relevant to gear tolerances and finish.
- Perform and lead Gage R&R (Repeatability & Reproducibility) studies to qualify new gages and inspection methods.
- Maintain measurement system integrity through calibration, verification, and correlation activities.
- Collaborate closely with gear designers, manufacturing engineers, and quality teams to resolve deviations and provide actionable feedback.
- Generate high-quality inspection reports and measurement summaries to support PPAP, design validation, and supplier communication.
- Support root cause investigations, CAPA efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives in gear manufacturing and inspection processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in gear inspection and measurement, preferably in automotive or aerospace environments.
- Proficiency in operating and programming CNC gear measuring equipment and functional roll testers.
- Experience with gear tooth surface roughness measurements using Mahr or similar tools.
- Solid understanding of Gage R&R methodology and statistical quality tools (SPC, Cp/Cpk, GRR studies).
- Strong knowledge of gear types (spur, helical, bevel), geometry, and measurement standards (AGMA, ISO, DIN).
- Fluent in interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T principles, and measurement traceability.
- Effective communicator with the ability to work in cross-functional engineering environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with gear inspection software and data management systems.
- Exposure to high-performance EV drivetrain systems or high-speed gear applications.
- Six Sigma, ASQ, or similar quality certifications.
- Working knowledge of ISO/TS16949, APQP, and PPAP processes.
Why Join Us?
- Be part of a team delivering industry-leading gear technology for cutting-edge Electric Vehicle Powertrain Systems.
- Gain exposure to state-of-the-art metrology tools and gear validation methodologies.
- Work closely with domain experts to elevate your technical depth in gear design and inspection.
Base Pay Range (Annual)
$120,000 - $165,000 USD
