RES is looking for a Scientist I to join our team.
RES is accepting applications for an entry level Scientist I for our Chicago, St Louis, Milwaukee, or Brodhead offices. The Scientist will need knowledge and experience in local and regional flora and fauna and many aspects of ecology and environmental science such as biology, hydrology, soils, wetlands, water quality, and geology as well as the regulatory environment of mitigation projects. This position will perform or assist more senior staff in performing all aspects of fieldwork and as well as follow up data entry and technical report writing. This work will support our clients and operations teams with knowledgeable ecological consulting and high-quality project delivery across a variety of ecosystem restoration and mitigation projects.

A Day in the Life
You will be performing or assisting with field assessments, including
- Wetland delineations/stream assessments
- Mitigation monitoring
- Feasibility assessments of potential restoration projects
- Endangered species and habitat surveys
- Vegetation assessments and monitoring
In performing these functions, you will need to:
- Collect, analyze, and interpret field data according to industry standards.
- Contribute to field work, data entry and analysis, reports and other aspects of projects.
- Prepare ecological studies and scientific reports, restoration plans, natural resources assessments and management plans..
- Understand state and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes related to mitigation, specifically CWA Sections 404 and 401 and threatened and endangered species laws.
- Participate in business development activities which may include preparing proposals for new work.
- Develop working relationships with clients and customers, regulatory agencies, and conservation groups.
- Coordinate and collaborate with others in the field, including the project managers, other ecologists, site managers, and members of the public..
- Participate in creative problem solving for projects and help improve processes for data gathering, assessments, analysis, reporting, team coordination, and project management.
- Maintain accurate records of time and expenses in the company’s information management system, adhere to company SOPs, and perform other administrative requirements as required.
We would like to talk to you if you have many of the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree in ecology or related field, such as wetland science, botany, wildlife biology (required), and 1 to 2 years of experience in ecological profession (preferred)
- Experience with GPS units, ArcGIS, and/or other ESRI field data collection software.
- Data entry skills and experience and with Excel and other data collection and processing systems.
- Scientific writing skills.
- Knowledge of restoration ecology theory, principles and practices and ability to apply to projects.

What would make you stand out?
- Master’s Degree in ecology or related field, such as wetland science, botany, wildlife biology (preferred)
- Knowledge of local and regional flora, fauna, and ecological systems. Ecological identification skills, including plants, animals, ecological communities, wetlands, soils, and others as necessary.
- Experience with state and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes, specifically, CWA Sections 404/401 and state and federal endangered species programs.
Illinois Pay Range
$50,700 - $59,550 USD
