Director, Agentic Software Development

Durham, NC

Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions is seeking a highly technical, visionary Director of Agentic Development to lead both the design and operation of Toshiba’s Agentic AI platform and drive its adoption across the company’s product portfolio. This role extends beyond building autonomous agentic workflows—it also ensures that these capabilities are adopted and utilized effectively within our existing retail software products, so that product teams can both build on and consume agentic services.

The Director will be accountable for the end-to-end lifecycle of the agentic platform, including architecture, orchestration, reliability, and observability, while also leading initiatives to embed agentic capabilities into microservice development, CI/CD pipelines, and customer-facing solutions. This leader will oversee global engineering and operations teams, engage directly with top customers, and ensure that agentic technology is delivering tangible business value with stringent uptime and operational reliability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Agentic Platform Leadership: Define and execute the technology roadmap for the agentic platform, ensuring alignment with business goals, scalability, and resilience.
  • Product Adoption & Utilization: Partner with product and engineering teams to embed agentic capabilities into existing retail solutions, ensuring features are both built with and leverage autonomous services.
  • Architecture & Reliability: Oversee platform architecture, orchestration patterns, validation checkpoints, observability, fallback mechanisms, and resilience at enterprise scale.
  • Self-Monitoring Systems: Drive implementation of self-healing, self-monitoring pipelines for both agentic and microservice environments, ensuring proactive issue detection and automated recovery.
  • CI/CD & Operations: Build and maintain hybrid pipelines (Maven, Jenkins, NPM, Yarn, Nx, Azure DevOps) that support both traditional and agentic workflows.
  • Team Leadership: Manage global operations and development teams, mentor technical leaders, and enforce engineering excellence.
  • Customer Engagement: Work directly with strategic retail customers to validate adoption scenarios, uptime expectations, and integration patterns.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with product management, architecture, QA, and operations to align investments, technical trade-offs, and delivery priorities.

SUCCESS METRICS

  • Platform Reliability: Uptime, incident response times, MTTR, and SLA compliance.
  • Adoption & Utilization: Rate of adoption of agentic services across Toshiba products and the business value realized from their use.
  • Delivery Velocity: Ability to release new agentic features and integrations at pace while maintaining stability.
  • Operational Efficiency: Reduction of manual toil through automation, improved cost efficiency, and enhanced resilience.
  • Team Growth: Retention and development of high-performing global engineering and ops teams.
  • Customer Outcomes: Positive adoption, satisfaction, and trust in agentic-enabled retail solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of software engineering with 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles (Director, Principal Architect, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated success delivering mission-critical distributed systems with high uptime and resilience requirements.
  • Proven experience leading adoption of emerging technology platforms across existing product portfolios.
  • Deep knowledge of agentic AI workflows, orchestration patterns, multi-agent systems, and observability frameworks.
  • Expertise in microservice development and deployment using Java, Maven, Jenkins, NPM, Yarn, Nx, and Azure DevOps.
  • Strong background in CI/CD pipeline design, monitoring, and automated recovery systems.
  • Hands-on experience managing global teams and leading high-pressure operational environments.
  • Strong communication and executive presence, with ability to engage both deeply technical staff and senior customer executives.

PREFERRED

  • Experience in the retail domain or with mission-critical enterprise systems.
  • Familiarity with agentic frameworks, prompt orchestration, and AI feedback loop design.
  • Knowledge of site reliability engineering (SRE), chaos testing, and hybrid edge/cloud deployment models.

This role is central to Toshiba’s transformation into an AI-driven software organization: you will not only build the autonomous engine but ensure that every product team can harness it effectively to deliver innovation, resilience, and customer value.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
