Mechanical Design Engineer

Hydro Group manufactures bespoke subsea cable and connector assembly engineering for the oil and gas, marine renewable energy and defence industries.

We are certified to ISO 9001 and 14001:2015 to design and manufacture subsea electrical and optical connectors, electrical pressure hull penetrators, associated subsea electrical cable terminations, installation of electrical and optical connectors, specialist underwater and harsh environment electrical and optical composite cables, tethers and umbilicals. Our products are precision-engineered to withstand the harshest environmental conditions.

Objectives / Scope

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be at the forefront of creating innovative electro-mechanical systems, combining mechanical engineering principles with cutting-edge technology. The role involves utilizing skills in Inventor, Vault, and MathCAD to develop and optimise mechanical designs, ensuring seamless integration with electrical components. The engineer will play a key role in bringing conceptual ideas to reality by collaborating with cross-functional teams and contributing to the overall success of electro-mechanical projects.

The successful candidate will be involved in the following:

  • Take ownership of live/R&D scope related design packages as assigned by the Lead. 
  • Lead associated draftsperson with the allocated scopes of work.
  • Check design packages (drawings, procedures, calculations, spec.sheets etc.)
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing/testing related issues.
  • Support the wider team in training material creation.

Main Responsibilities

  • Electro-Mechanical Systems Design:
    • Develop detailed mechanical designs for electro-mechanical systems, considering functionality, manufacturability, and integration with electrical components.
    • Collaborate with electrical engineers to ensure the seamless integration of mechanical and electrical elements within systems.
    • Utilise Autodesk Inventor to create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings of mechanical components.
  • Software Tools Utilisation:
    • Harness the capabilities of Autodesk Vault for version control and effective management of design data, ensuring seamless collaboration across project teams.
    • Apply MathCAD for engineering calculations and analyses, ensuring the structural integrity and performance of mechanical designs.
    • Stay updated with the latest features and enhancements in Inventor, Vault, and MathCAD, incorporating them into the design process for increased efficiency.
  • Prototyping and Testing Support:
    • Work closely with prototype development teams to translate design concepts into functional prototypes.
    • Collaborate with testing and validation teams to conduct rigorous testing of mechanical components, addressing any issues identified during the testing phase.
    • Provide technical support and solutions to enhance the performance and reliability of mechanical designs.
  • Design Optimisation and Innovation:
    • Continuously assess and optimise mechanical designs for performance, cost, and manufacturability.
    • Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance the overall functionality and efficiency of electro-mechanical systems.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to incorporate feedback and improvements throughout the design lifecycle. 
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Implement robust quality control measures to ensure that mechanical designs meet or exceed industry standards and project specifications.
    • Conduct thorough design reviews, seeking input from team members to enhance the quality and reliability of mechanical components.
    • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure that designs are manufacturable and align with production requirements.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Generate comprehensive documentation for all mechanical designs, including specifications, assembly instructions, and design validation reports.
    •  Provide regular progress reports to project management and stakeholders, highlighting achievements, challenges, and proposed solutions.
    • Maintain organised and up-to-date documentation for future reference and knowledge sharing.

Skills Base

  • A minimum 2:1 classification BEng or MEng in Mechanical or an appropriate discipline coupled with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Post-graduate degree desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge Inventor, Vault and MathCAD.
  • Good understanding of Engineering principles and data analysis.
  • Project management skills to organise tasks, manage timelines and control budgets.
  • Balance of technical, commercial and leadership experience to deliver technically complex projects on-time, on-budget and in exceedance of our clients' expectations.
  • Desire to make a difference and take responsibility and ownership of engineering activities and to drive continual improvement.
  • Growth mindset to learn new skills and apply skills to new and different applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel.
