As the Backend Director at Backbase, you hold a pivotal role that integrates strategic leadership, technical expertise, and mentorship within the backend development domain. You have functional oversight and guidance to the entire engineering team, and in particular principal engineers. You provide expert advice on the technologies involved in the development and implementation of Backbase products.

Meet the Job

Your primary objective is to shape the direction of Backbase’s Backend discipline while also serving as a recognized authority in the broader engineering landscape. You will report to the CTO, and together with your peers for Android, iOS and Web, you will help shape the technical vision for our product’s digital channels and the technical guidelines for its development.

● You are the main expert when it comes to Backbase vision and technical strategy for backend technologies, and think broadly about industry trends, competitor analysis, and innovation;

● You drive large change-management initiatives to resolve tech debt and improve our way of working;

● You take the responsibility to make our products and the company better every day. Whenever a challenge arises, you deliver efficient and smart solutions;

● You work with several value streams and departments, from building the products with our research and development squads to consulting with our customers and implementing projects in our customer success teams;

● You define and develop the software architecture for the backend guild, using modern technologies and tools;

● You define and enforce the right team compositions to ensure we are prepared to build the best product effectively; 

● You meet and align with stakeholders from professional services and customers/prospects to gather feedback and present the technical roadmap.

How about you?

As the future Backend Director at Backbase, you play a pivotal role in driving backend strategy, technical excellence, and innovation within the organisation while also providing leadership and mentorship to engineering teams and therefore we believe to really take this role to the next level, we think you’ll need:

● Extensive experience in backend development, with a proven track record of architecting backend strategies and defining best practices;

● Solid knowledge of Java, Spring, Docker, Maven, Kubernetes and Helm is a must;

● In-depth technical expertise in backend architecture, quality assurance, and performance optimization, with a focus on meeting high standards of quality, security, and accessibility;

● Strong leadership skills, demonstrated by the ability to coordinate change management  efforts, resolve technical issues, and maintain product consistency across teams;

● Proven track record of successful cross-functional collaboration, including experience working with professional management and product development teams to ensure the successful implementation of backend projects and products;

● Exceptional communication and client engagement skills, including experience in gathering and implementing client feedback to drive improvement initiatives;

● Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor teams, including experience in recruitment, talent management, and fostering collaboration within a technical guild or similar structure.
