Associate Energy Engineer, ABB/VFD - Johnson Barrow

Position Summary
We are seeking an entry-level Associate Energy Engineer to support our ABB/VFD Sales team by applying engineering knowledge to evaluate commercial HVAC and electrical control systems and develop technical recommendations. This role is ideal for a recent graduate in mechanical or electrical engineering who wants to launch a career in building systems, energy efficiency, and ABB product solutions such as variable frequency drives (VFDs), motors, and control technologies. You will conduct on-site assessments, analyze system data, and prepare reports and recommendations that guide our sales and service teams. Training and mentorship will be provided to help you grow into a trusted technical advisor for our customers.
This position requires 50 to 75 percent travel, primarily within Seattle and Portland, with occasional trips to Boise and Spokane. Travel may include overnight stays. All business travel expenses are reimbursed in accordance with company policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site assessments of HVAC and electrical control systems in commercial buildings using engineering principles.
- Collect and analyze system data (equipment type, condition, operating schedules, control strategies) to identify improvement opportunities.
- Develop technical recommendations for ABB product solutions, including VFD retrofits, control upgrades, and motor replacements.
- Prepare detailed audit reports, savings estimates, and scope documents to support customer proposals.
- Exercise independent judgment in selecting methods of evaluation and interpreting data to develop recommendations.
- Act as a technical resource in customer meetings, explaining ABB solutions and answering basic engineering questions.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, analyses, and recommendations in CRM and reporting tools.
- Participate in ongoing training to deepen your expertise in HVAC systems, controls, ABB drives and controls, and energy efficiency technologies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (required).
- Demonstrated interest or coursework in HVAC systems, building operations, or electrical/controls work.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports.
- Comfortable using mobile tools, templates, and CRM systems.
- Ability to work independently in the field and exercise judgment in developing recommendations.
- Eagerness to develop technical expertise and grow within the HVAC, controls, and ABB solutions industry.

Pay Transparency
In compliance with Washington and Oregon pay transparency laws, Johnson Barrow provides the expected salary range for all posted positions. For this role, the anticipated annual salary range is $70,000 – $78,000, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition, Johnson Barrow offers a comprehensive benefits package and reimburses business travel expenses in accordance with company policy.
