Overview – Role

Jensen Hughes is seeking midlevel Building Code Consultant for Australia.  In this role, you will have responsibility for providing timely and effective support to Directors, Managers and Senior Building Regulations Consultants with respect to the assessment, inspection and reporting on building or design proposals. 

We are looking for highly motivated individuals having a well-rounded background in construction industry, capable of being accredited as a Building Surveyor detailed knowledge of the BCA and related Australian Standards, while working under the supervision of Directors and Managers and adhering to the Company’s Business Management System and ISO standards.

Responsibilities 

  • Providing timely and effective support to Directors, Managers and Senior Building Regulations Consultants with respect to the assessment, inspection and reporting on building or design proposals.
  • Providing advice and interpretation of the Access provisions of the Building Regulations and other associated documents. Disability (Access to Premises – Building) Standards 2010
  • Aid in the application of Building Regulations to project design and development, while participating in negotiations with Building Regulatory Authorities.
  • Conduct Fire protection surveys and audits of existing buildings for fire safety upgrading and changes of uses & provide appraisals and certification of “Essential Fire Safety Measures”
  • Preparation of “Performance Solution” Design verification reports for non-fire performance solutions
  • Preparation of certification of building design and certification of completion/occupation compliance certificates within time and cost constraints and fulfilling quality requirements.
  • Preparation of Fee Proposals, progress reports and workflow reports to Directors and Managers
  • Determine where variations to the scope of works are necessary under the BCA guidelines, in discussion with your manager& assess or critique Fire Engineering Reports,
  • Undertake site inspections of progressing and completed works while representing Jensen Hughes at site visits and client meetings.
  • Assist Technical Staff with any Building Code Regulations queries/concerns & assist colleagues and direct manager with technical input, tasks, and QAs.
  • Source your own clients, in addition to the work provided to you by Jensen Hughes and identify opportunities for new business market or clients
  • Remain familiar with the Work Health and Safety requirements for the office and onsite.
  • Remain familiar with all Company policies and procedures and ensure that any staff supervised abide by these policies and procedures as well and recommend any changes or amendments to policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate an eagerness to research and understand complex issues and to think forward to ramifications of decisions and provide sensible alternate approaches

 Requirements and Qualifications 

  • Post graduate qualification in ‘Building Surveying’ or a similar stream along with at least 2 years of relevant industry experience and detailed knowledge of the performance requirements of the BCA, able to work with limited supervision.
  • Have a CPCCOHS1001A – work safety in the construction industry qualification (white card) or be prepared to undertake training and a history of participating in an industry-based Continuing Professional Development Scheme (CPD).
  • Familiar with the construction industry and capable of being accredited as a Building Surveyor (Restricted) (formally A2 or A3 Accredited Building Surveyor) under the provisions of the NSW Department of Fair-Trading Registered Certifiers Accreditation Scheme
  • Have a detailed knowledge of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and Regulations, Home Building Act and Regulations and the Disability Discrimination Act and Regulations
  • Computer literate, skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel, Microsoft O365, and able to write complex and detailed reports including BCA Assessment and audit reports
  • Expertise in Bluebeam (or similar) along BQE Core required
  • Fluent in written and spoken English, able to negotiate with approval authorities on recommendations and proposals and capable of developing and maintaining a broad network of people within the industry
  • Have client management experience and skills, to be further honed through coaching and support
  • Have a flexible approach to working hours which may include, from time to time, attending meetings after hours or on weekends or overnight travel to attend meetings or inspect buildings, while managing multiple project requirements
  • Current Class C Driver’s License
  • Personal drive, results-orientated with a friendly, can-do attitude and a high level of honesty, integrity, commitment and responsibility
  • Should be an Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident or holding a valid Work Visa in Australia
