Senior Concept Artist 

 

Dark Outlaw Games, a Sony PlayStation Studio, is seeking outstanding talent to join our passionate and creative family in crafting our next high-profile AAA console title. 

  
We are seeking a Senior Concept Artist to join our LA studio, reporting directly to our Art Director. The ideal candidate is proactive, with strong skills in digital illustration, 3D modeling, character design, graphic design, experience with generative AI tools, and passionate about making games. Help us create our next AAA title — one that will truly stand apart from the rest! 

 

We are a newly established AAA studio based in Los Angeles, driven by a team of seasoned industry leaders and experienced game developers. Our mission is to create the next groundbreaking AAA original IP while reimagining the development process with a lean and highly efficient approach. We’re seeking talented individuals who share our vision and are eager to join us on this journey. 

  

Responsibilities:  

 

The Senior Concept Artist will play a critical role in defining and conceptualizing the visual language for our AAA game projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in various aspects of concept art, including environments, characters, and props, and will thrive in both independent and collaborative settings. 

 

  

  • Develop high-quality concept art for characters, environments, weapons, props and UI that align with the project's artistic vision and gameplay goals. 

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines, including design, programming, and external artistic partners. 

  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team to generate innovative ideas and deliver compelling visual designs. 

  • Provide clear feedback and guidance through style guides, illustrations, paint-overs of in-game geometry, 3D blockouts, or written documentation, to both internal and external artists to maintain artistic consistency and quality. 

  • Assist the Art Director in developing the game's artistic style, visual identity, and lore. 

  • Create detailed concepts for various game elements, ensuring they are production-ready for 3D artists, designers, and animators. 

  • Proactively engage in the ideation process, contributing original concepts and problem-solving through visual storytelling. 

  • Refine and polish 2D artwork created by both human artists and generative AI tools 

 

  

Qualifications:  

  

  • Minimum 3 years of industry experience in game production  

  • Proven experience as a Principal Concept Artist, Senior Concept Artist, or Associate Art Director in the AAA gaming industry. 

  • Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in creating captivating concept art for characters, environments, and weapons in AAA titles. 

  • Ability to ideate independently and communicate ideas effectively to team members and partners. 

  • A deep understanding of visual design, with a focus on how art can enhance gameplay and narrative experiences. 

  • Demonstrate exceptional skill in digital sketching, painting, and 3D modeling along with advanced expertise in using generative AI tools such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, ChatGPT, or similar platforms. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the capability to interface internally and externally across varying disciplines. 

  • Expertise in digital illustration tools and software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Blender, or similar platforms. 

  • Deep understanding of visual storytelling, cinematography, typography, and graphic design principles. 

  • Excellent organizational & prioritization skills, attention to detail, process knowledge and the ability to multi-task  

  • Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced, dynamic environment  

  • Knowledgeable of current industry trends; stays up to date on competitive products and best practices  

  • Must love games and have a true passion for creating them!  

 

Bonus for: 

  • Proven experience working on Playstation games 

  • Ability to create high-quality motion graphics, video edits, and VFX using tools like After Effects and Premiere. 

  • Hands-on experience working with game engines like Unreal, Unity, or proprietary in-house engines.

At SIE, we consider several factors when setting each role’s base pay range, including the competitive benchmarking data for the market and geographic location.

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.

The estimated base pay range for this role is listed below.

$115,900 - $173,900 USD
