The Mission Designer at Firaxis brings a strong blend of level, encounter, and objective design expertise to our games. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience across all three — especially within the turn-based tactics genre — and thrives in cross-team collaboration. Mission Designers works closely with Level Design and Environment Art to craft tactical objectives that reinforce and elevate core gameplay mechanics.
Firaxis is looking for a Mission Designer with a deep appreciation for turn-based tactics — someone who can turn passion into compelling, challenging experiences that bring depth and energy to every mission. With support from design leads, this role will take ownership of major gameplay sequences and drive them from concept to final implementation.
Responsibilities:
- Author mission and objective logic in encounters to make the level's end-to-end experience flow properly with the rest of the game.
- Collaborate with engineering to stand up new objectives and scripted events, identify issues, and work with stakeholders to get them working.
- Collaborate with combat design to implement new enemy types, integrate them into existing spawn groups, and tune the difficulty of encounters.
- Collaborate with producers to plan out and prioritize the development schedule. Know what the most important parts of the design are and have plans to reduce scope if something takes longer than expected.
- Create and maintain mission design documentation.
- Ensure missions meet the highest standards of quality, from gameplay balance to technical performance.
Qualifications:
- Committed and humble person that welcomes feedback and critique, and enjoys working in a collaborative, iterative process.
- 5+ years of experience in the game industry as a level designer or mission designer.
- Experience working with Unreal 4 and Blueprints.
- Experience with combat encounter composition, combat enemy roles, and how to leverage enemy behavior.
- Understanding of level design practices, techniques, and space composition.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
Extra Points:
- Experience working with Unreal 5
- Familiarity with systems design
- Experience working in the tactics space.
