Your Mission:

We are searching for an experienced Director of Indirect Tax to manage all aspects of our indirect tax compliance. This position reports directly to the VP of Accounting and will have high visibility and interaction with senior leaders throughout the company. You will be Engine’s first internal tax member and will partner with external consultants and internal stakeholders to build the company’s tax function.

The successful candidate will thrive with problem solving in a fast and challenging environment and possess the ability to be strategic while also being hands-on with data collection and analysis. You will manage our indirect tax obligations and strategy in the United States, Canada, and Europe as we invest in international expansion and create our compliance roadmap. Additionally, you will work cross-functionally with our Product and Engineering teams to solve complex tax matters within our platform.

  • Establish and maintain indirect tax registrations and filings, including but not limited to, sales, use, lodging, hotel occupancy, and property taxes.
  • Ensure the accuracy of our ASC 450 tax reserve, supporting workpapers, and related financial disclosures.
  • Research and communicate analysis of risks and opportunities in existing and prospective markets and manage related voluntary disclosures (VDA). 
  • Manage and oversee the completion of tax analysis and projects, including data collection, providing actionable insights to stakeholders. 
  • Provide recommendations on various indirect tax matters including working with Legal, Sales, and Engineering teams on contractual language and system configurations. 
  • Partner with our Accounting team to ensure all tax liability accounts and payments are reconciled and recorded timely and accurately during month-end close. 
  • Monitor and manage indirect tax audits and notices, minimizing risks and ensuring compliance.
  • Develop and implement tax strategies in line with company objectives and compliance requirements, leveraging a deep understanding of Engine’s business model. 
  • Continuously drive automation projects for scalable tax reporting. 
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to provide timely and accurate information and ad hoc analysis. 
  • Manage external relationships with tax advisors and consultants. 

What You’ll Bring to Engine:
We’re looking for someone who’s ready to make an impact and grow alongside us:

  • Experience: 10+ years of hands-on experience in corporate in-house tax and/or public accounting experience focused on tax compliance and strategy.
  • Skills: You’re a problem-solver with prior experience leading lodging and occupancy tax analysis and compliance projects. , and you thrive in fast-paced, innovative environments.
  • Tech-Savvy: Bonus points if you’re fluent in tax automation tools (e.g., Vertex, Alteryx, Avalara, or similar tools).
  • Mindset: You’re ready to roll up your sleeves, collaborate, and deliver results that matter.
