Manager Indirect Tax

POSITION SUMMARY:

As the Manager Indirect Tax, you will be seen as a trusted partner of the Company’s indirect tax function.  You will partner with other business departments as well as the Company’s external tax advisors to oversee and participate in sales and use tax functions as well as other indirect tax areas for the Company.  You will review proposals for tax implications and recommend actions that meet the business plans while managing the tax liability.  You will lead and participate in sales and use tax audits.  You will be involved with tax implications of mergers and acquisitions or other structuring projects.  The Manager Indirect Tax will provide oversight on unclaimed property reporting and escheatment and assist with special projects and unique assignments to ensure deadlines are met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Consistently provides proven, formal mentorship.
  • Leads high complexity assignments.
  • Develop and oversee a team of tax preparers and reviewers.
  • Is viewed as an established SME and/or established as a specialist.
  • Understands the “big picture” view and how it aligns to overall company strategy.
  • Responsible for the oversight of tax return preparation and completion within required deadlines for all US states and Canadian federal and provincial taxes.
  • Assist in gathering and preparing information required for various components of tax reporting, state and local tax returns for sales/use/property/escheat/miscellaneous taxes.
  • Engage/negotiate with tax authorities, responding to inquiries and resolving any tax-related issues in a timely manner.
  • Drives the preparation and analysis of various tax-related projects, such as process improvements and automation, and ERP system implementation/updates.
  • Utilize analytics to better understand indirect tax spend to identify potential areas of overpayment and underpayment.
  • Assist and approve the maintenance of Vertex and Diagnostax tax systems.
  • Performs research and interprets tax laws and/or tax accounting rules and regulations applicable to new businesses, transactions, or new product offerings.
  • Stay informed about changes in tax laws, assessing their impact on the business and communicating to senior leadership on strategy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate tax considerations into business operations, contracts, and transactions.
  • Direct the strategy on all audits of indirect tax in various jurisdictions to minimize the impact on the business. Lead financial statement audits of tax-related items.
  • Assist with tax compliance testing and reporting review to ensure SOX compliance.
  • Review and approve account reconciliations and tax journal entries.
  • Responsible for managing applicable sales/use/property/miscellaneous tax registrations.
  • Ensure compliance with state tax laws for sales, personal property, and unclaimed taxes.
  • Direct daily operating and administrative activities of the tax department.
  • Attention to detail: Does not let important details slip through the cracks or derail a project and manages multiple priorities at a time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required
  • Ability to work onsite in an office environment with limited remote work alternatives, consistent with applicable law

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS/BA in Accounting, Finance or similar field is required – MBA/CPA/CMI is a plus
  • 8+ years of experience working with corporate indirect tax departments
  • Prior people leadership experience
  • Accounting experience with multi-state sales and property tax filing is required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interface well with internal departments and outside customers
  • Detail-oriented, strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated strong project management skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Proficient in key tools such as Excel, Word, SAP, Hyperion
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Vertex O Series, Vertex Returns and Diagnostax
