What we’re looking for
We are seeking a talented Senior Software Engineer I to join SurveyMonkey. As a key contributor, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining backend services that power our form-building and data-processing platforms. You will work closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to build scalable, reliable, and secure systems that enhance user experiences.

What you’ll be working on
- Designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and APIs that support our applications.
- Ensuring system scalability, reliability, and maintainability while optimizing performance.
- Contributing to the modernization of legacy PHP systems and transitioning through language version upgrades and dependency updates.
- Collaborating with frontend engineers, product managers, and UX designers to build seamless end-to-end experiences.
- Implementing automated tests, CI/CD pipelines, and best practices for backend development.
- Participating in code reviews, technical discussions, and architecture planning.
- Troubleshooting and debugging complex issues in production and staging environments.
- Ensuring backend security, data integrity, and compliance with best practices.
- Working with Docker, MySQL, and cloud-based services to improve deployment and infrastructure reliability.
- Supporting and maintaining WordPress-based deployments where applicable.
We’d love to hear from people with
- 5+ years of professional experience in backend development using PHP and Python.
- Strong experience in building and consuming RESTful APIs.
- Experience with modern PHP frameworks (Laravel, Symfony, or similar) and Python frameworks (Flask, FastAPI, Django).
- Experience maintaining and modernizing legacy PHP applications, including handling version transitions and dependency management.
- Proficiency in database design and query optimization using MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Experience with containerization (Docker, Docker Compose) and cloud-based deployment strategies.
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, or similar).
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills with the ability to work on legacy codebases.
- Knowledge of frontend-backend integration, API versioning, and best practices in web security.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in distributed teams.
SurveyMonkey believes in-person collaboration is valuable for building relationships, fostering community, and enhancing our speed and execution in problem-solving and decision-making. As such, this opportunity is hybrid and requires you to work from the SurveyMonkey office in Bengaluru 3 days per week.
