Canadian Fund Tax - Vice President

About the Role

iCapital’s rapid expansion in the Canada marketplace creates an opportunity for an experienced and talented tax professional to support its Canada expansion strategy in a newly created role within the Operations and Investment Product Management team. This role, along with team members, will service all Canadian access funds including coordinating with various internal stakeholders and external advisors in ensuring tax compliance are met and effective and efficient structuring are in place for our investors and partners, as well as drive continuous improvement throughout the processes. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the full cycle of Canadian tax compliance with external tax service providers for our feeder funds that are trusts and partnerships. Actively coordinate with the external tax preparer, fund administrator, and other internal teams on income tax (i.e.T5013, T3, T5008, T1134, T1135), indirect taxes (SLFI returns), and non-resident withholding obligations.
  • Create, develop, and document clear procedures for various tax operations that can be easily followed by external service providers.
  • Manage non-resident withholding obligations for applicable funds, collaborating with internal teams and external providers to ensure the correct withholding amounts are submitted to the CRA on time.
  • Oversee the monitoring and communication of the MFT status to relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee annual indirect tax filings and investor outreach for provincial allocations.
  • Oversee the timely analysis and high-quality responses on investor tax inquiries.
  • Lead and manage external service providers and internal cross functional teams on existing and new tax projects as required.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and fund administrators to ensure slips are posted on platforms successfully.
  • Assist in tax due diligence and compliance model setup for Canadian fund launches.
  • Assist with Head of Canadian Tax to monitor changes in legislation impacting iCapital and assisting with communication and projects arising from these changes.
  • Conduct business analysis to identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies within the tax department.

Qualifications

  • A professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is required
  • Strong management skills and can drive projects from end to end and work collaboratively with cross function teams.
  • 10+ years of experience in Canadian partnership and mutual fund and unit trust taxation is preferred
  • Strong understanding of various structures used for Canadian partnership and mutual fund trusts that invest in foreign funds
  • Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills
  • Adaptable to change with the ability to lead others through change
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, exercise judgment, and make decisions while assessing risk and its impact
  • Strong people skills, initiative, and leadership abilities with the capability to coach and motivate other professionals
  • Strong client service orientation with the ability to build partnerships and effective working relationships
  • Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

The base salary range for this role is between CAD 110,000 to CAD 135,000.  iCapital offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes a competitive total compensation package consisting of salary, bonus, and equity for all full-time employees.   The Company pays 100% of the premium for all Group Benefits for you and your dependents.  Some of these benefits include medical, dental, vision, prescription, life insurance and long-term disability.  We offer a variety of Retirement Plans which have a company match.   We offer unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) and most employees the flexibility to work in the office three to four days and remotely for the remainder of the week.  Every department has different needs, and some positions will be designated in-office jobs, based on their function.
