Head of Data Operations

About the Job

We expect the Head of Data Operations to take on a critical leadership position, working closely with multiple teams at Karya to lead our daily data operations:

  1. Lead and manage a large team of data workers (100,000+), ensuring efficient operations, empathy and production of high-quality data.
  2. Diagnosing and improving weak links within the data operations process.
  3. Ensuring the internal operations teams regularly communicate with other operations-involved teams (Sales, Tech, Impact) and execute projects as per expectations (time, cost, quality and impact).
  4. Oversee operations planning, worker identification, mobilisation, training, data collection, and pilot testing for all Karya projects.
  5. Working closely with the Impact Operations Lead and Chief Impact Officer to ensure impact criteria are being met during projects and worker welfare is taken deeply into consideration.
  6. Have an eye on ways to improve and streamline the operations processes and data pipelines through tech-based automation.
  7. Make data-driven suggestions for improving the data pipeline and Karya application.
  8. Collaborate with leadership to align operational strategies with company goals.
  9. Support the COO in managing the overall strategy for the Operations team, in collaboration with the Co-Founders.
  10. Represent Karya externally to: further partnerships, support with fundraising and evangelize Karya’s work at global events.

Skills and experience

  • Post graduate or graduate degree required.
  • 5+ years of experience in leading operations, ideally in segments with large-scale operations involving oversight of 100,000+ people 
  • High data literacy, with specific experience with data pipelines, data validation and large datasets. 
  • Comfortable with hiring for and managing a large team, experience managing those in a BPO or gig-work settings is an asset. 
  • Strong understanding of operations but able to think about "lean ops" and how technology can further this mission. 
  • Understanding of the on-ground work and ability to empathize with workers, with 
  • Working knowledge of the social impact space in India is required.
  • Ability to create collaborative work environments across multiple teams with people from diverse contexts and backgrounds.
  • Ability to embrace ambiguity and learning as a member of a small and energetic team. 
  • Willingness to travel (40%) across India.
