About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Linux Engineer to join our dynamic IT team. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and familiarity with fiber channel storage solutions, specifically Pure Storage. This role requires a proactive professional who can design, implement, and maintain a robust Linux environment to support our enterprise infrastructure.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in infrastructure design and management, with strong proficiency in various Linux, storage, and cloud platforms such as RHEL, Debian, Pure, EMC, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform. They will possess excellent problem-solving skills, strong communication abilities, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Expertise in containerization technologies and orchestration tools is essential.

The ideal candidate will possess expert-level industry certifications in cloud environments and have practical experience in cloud development, management, and operations. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a proven track record of delivering scalable, reliable, and secure cloud solutions. Experience at top-tier SaaS/cloud infra companies is preferred. 

  • Deploy advanced technical solutions that drive the evolution of Uber Freight’s systems and storage platforms.
  • Focus on modernizing infrastructure and DevOps integration.
  • Implement Infrastructure-as-Code, Kubernetes, and Zero Trust architecture. 
  • Apply Site Reliability Engineering to create resilient and scalable platforms. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize performance and enhance system architecture. 
  • Enable and evolve Uber Freight’s foundational infrastructure layers, including observability, connectivity, resilience, and availability. 

 

What the Candidate Will Do

You will be supporting the development and maintenance of a modern Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solution in our environment. These environments: a mix of servers, workstations, storage, networks, and custom applications, which provide the enterprise hybrid-cloud backbone for product development and customer support. A mixture of hands-on keyboard engineering work as well as documentation and baseline control is required. 

  • You will leverage company and industry best practices and capabilities to assist with deployment, implementation, modernization, and support of IaC solutions. 
  • You will support software tool customization and automation, including deployment of templates, dashboards, and scripts to support program needs, utilizing Ansible playbooks and other automation systems. 
  • You will assist with integration of the selected platform provisioning tool, such as Terraform and VMWare. 
  • You will assist with design / architecture / development and support of build / test pipeline and integration, optimizing for performance and scalability across on-premise and cloud computing environments. 
  • You will assist engineers with specialized tool usage and issues, leveraging standards and best practices towards the solution. 
  • You will utilize your Linux skills at the command line to support & maintain storage configurations for storage devices, including SAN, NAS, and scale-out object storage. 
  • You will maintain contact with vendors for hardware and software installation and troubleshooting. 
  • Troubleshoot complex issues related to Linux servers and storage systems. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and ensure high availability. 
  • Perform regular system updates, patches, and security enhancements. 
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior Linux engineers.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in Linux administration. 
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience managing SAN / FC storage systems. 
  • Experience with Ansible, Terraform, or CloudFormation. 
  • Expertise in Docker, Kubernetes, and orchestration. 
  • Experience deploying, configuring, and supporting CICD Pipelines tools (E.g. Jira / Jira Service Management, Confluence, Bit Bucket, Jenkins, Artifactory). 
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and conceptual thinking. 
  • Focused, driven, and results-oriented. 
  • Container development and orchestration (E.g. Kubernetes/Docker). 
  • Experience with containerized storage solutions (E.g. PVC/OCP/Kubernetes) 
  • VM provisioning (E.g. VMWare / KVM). 
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert certifications in RHEL, SUSE, or Ubuntu 
  • Experience with GitHub Actions, Terraform Enterprise, Sentinel, and OPA. 
  • Experience with distributed systems in public cloud. 
  • Strong scripting in Python, Go, and Bash. 
  • Prior experience at FAANG or top-tier SaaS/cloud infra companies. 
  • Passion for automation, learning, and high-performance teams. 
  • Ability to influence and inspire others. 
  • Knowledge of basic Windows technologies (AD, DNS, etc.). 
  • Experience incorporating PCI, SOX, and SOC 2 controls related to OS hardening. 
  • Experience working on Data Center Migration Projects. 
  • Knowledge of basic Network technology as it relates to virtualization. 
  • Experience in ITIL-based service management and agile methodologies. 
  • Experience with development team management software, including JIRA, GitHub, and Confluence. 
  • Background in COTS/FOSS product installation, configuration, and integration. 
  • Experience designing, configuring, deploying, and supporting Network Attached Storage Systems (e.g., Dell, IBM, NetApp) 
  • Experience with enterprise backup architecture, emphasizing Cohesity for backup solutions

For Illinois based roles: The salary range for this role is $131,000 - $170,000 a year.
