Position Overview

Exciting opportunity to join Stanley 1913's product creation team as a Senior Design Engineer. In this role you will be part of a growing engineering community, that's focused on innovation, originality, while driving technical production development and the engineering of products that inspire consumers to create a more sustainable world. This role reports into the Senior Manager of Engineering and will work closely with cross-functional partners within industrial design, product management, production engineering, quality, and compliance to deliver consumer centric, reliable and high-quality products. This role is required to be working onsite 3+ days in the office out of the Seattle, WA headquarters.

What You'll Do

Design:

  • Conceptualization: Work closely with product management and industrial design to conceptualize new product ideas based on consumer / market needs.
  • Human Factors: Prototype and test designs against human factor considerations.

Engineering:

  • Engineering Development: Determine all aspects of product engineering such as mechanism design, material selection, manufacturing methods, assembly, and performance validation to achieve product requirements and preserve design intent. Act as primary technical project team member throughout product development process from kick-off through mass production.
  • Prototyping: Create mock-ups, proof-of-concepts and high-fidelity prototypes to evaluate designs. Leverage internal and external resources to test, draw conclusions and iterate.
  • Product Specification Creation: Document product design through technical specification packages, 3D / 2D engineering drawings and bill of materials; oversee change management.
  • Design for Manufacturing: Collaborate with global factory teams to ensure manufacturability and understand cost drivers. Travel internationally to resolve product issues and build relationships.
  • Product Validation: Collaborate with quality assurance and compliance to develop test plans against function, performance, safety, and sustainability standards. Conduct testing of prototypes and manufactured samples and carry out root cause analysis to identify and remedy failure modes.
  • Intellectual Property: Identify possible infringement issues and/or protectable innovations.

Project Management / Communication:

  • Timeline Adherence: Drive project schedule upkeep in collaboration with project management. Maintain transparency across multiple active projects.
  • Product Cost: Drive cost engineering efforts as needed to meet retail cost and margin goals.
  • Engineering Communication: Drive technical communication between project team and international factory partners to clearly communicate product needs and document design.
  • Presentations: Publicly present and effectively communicate to a variety of audiences of peers and leadership throughout product development cycle.

Leadership:

  • Mentorship: Provide mentorship and coaching to Associate and Staff Engineers.
  • Specialization: Hold “specialist” role for the team in multiple domains.
  • Oversight: Perform the role described at a proactive and strategic level with minimal guidance.
  • Management: Manage interns or support in management activities.
  • Process Development: Actively proposes and implements process change and refinement.

Technical:

  • Mechanical Competence: Expert Ability to conceptualize, design, and validate mechanical systems. Expert intuition for how things work and how things fail.

  • Engineering Analysis: Expertise with analysis tools: DFMEA, FEA, DOE, mold flow, tolerancing.
  • Prototype Fabrication: Prototyping at appropriate level of fidelity to test and iterate quickly
  • Vendor Relations: Experience collaborating with international vendors on manufacturing and issue resolution. Experience traveling to vendors to trouble shoot issues in real time, Asia preferred.

  • Education: BS in engineering / related study or 10+ years equivalent work experience.
  • Professional Experience: 10+ years prior experience in similar position. 5+ years in consumer product development.
  • CAD: Advanced CAD experience required, preferably proficient in Solidworks.
  • Manufacturing: Expertise with mass manufacturing techniques including Injection molding and metal forming. Soft goods / cut and sew experience a plus.
  • Digital Tools: Proficient with MS Office, project management software (Smart Sheets preferred), PLM systems (Centric preferred), Adobe creative suite desirable.
  • Machine Shop / Rapid Prototyping: Experienced with machine shop, rapid prototyping and lab tools.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills. Expert at collaborating with international teams and non-native English speakers. Expert at building trust and influence within a cross-functional organization.
  • Consumer Centric Mid-set: Passionate about creating consumer centric product and user experiences.

The base pay range for this position is for a successful candidate within the state listed. The successful candidate’s actual pay will be based on multiple factors such as work location, job-related knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience.

Salary Range

$125,000 - $160,000 USD
