Data Scientist – Metrology
Overview
We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity for a Data Scientist – Metrology to join our team in Hickory, NC. In this role, you’ll apply advanced analytics, statistics, and machine learning techniques to solve metrology challenges in high-precision manufacturing. You’ll collaborate with engineering teams to improve product validation, process control, and measurement systems—bridging the gap between data science and fiber-optic innovation.
Responsibilities
- Analyze metrology datasets to identify trends, improve accuracy, and optimize manufacturing efficiency
- Develop and maintain statistical models, monitoring systems, and predictive algorithms
- Design experiments and interpret results using tools like Excel, Minitab, MATLAB, Python, or R
- Collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot quality issues and propose data-driven corrective actions
- Support the creation of fixtures, automation routines, and measurement programs for ferrule and mold validation
- Document test plans, results, and analyses; contribute to technical reports and patent filings
- Manage databases and reporting systems to ensure accessible, reliable measurement data
- Stay current with emerging metrology tools, image processing techniques, and advanced analysis methods
Must Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in data science, Metrology, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
- Minimum 2 years of experience in data analysis, metrology, or manufacturing analytics
- Strong foundation in statistics, data modeling, and experimental design
- Solid understanding of mechanical design principles
- Proficiency with at least one data-analysis tool or language (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, Minitab, Excel)
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Nice to Haves
- Experience with optical metrology, image processing, or CAD tools
- Familiarity with automation, robotics, or automated test systems
- Exposure to machine learning or AI-driven analysis methods
