Director, Football Communications

Overview /Objective: 

The Director, Football Communications will develop and implement communications strategies focused on the strength and growth of football at all levels. The successful candidate will strategically promote key football themes, communicating with internal and external stakeholders to oversee the creation and distribution of innovative and captivating content to drive on-field narratives. This role will also play a leading role in media operations at NFL events, maintaining the league’s reputation as best-in-class. 

The Director will act as a strategist for all football-related initiatives, including youth, flag, and high school football, as well as partnerships with colleges, NFL Player Engagement, the NFL Legends community, and key priorities within NFL Football Operations—all with the goal of supporting and promoting the sport in every form. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders (football operations, player marketing, broadcasting) to develop effective communication strategies focused on the NFL’s efforts to strengthen and grow football at all levels of the sport, including initiatives related to youth, flag and high school football. 
  • Direct a football communications strategy to meet the needs of the various media that cover the sport by generating unique and compelling content for use across all forms of media, helping focus attention on the game itself.  
  • Serve as a secondary point of contact for the Senior Vice President of Football Communications for internal and external stakeholders, including all 32 club communications staffs, providing timely information, addressing inquiries (including those related to the Media Access and Injury Report Policies), and ensuring positive relationships to support business objectives.  
  • Play a leading role in media operations activities at all NFL events, including the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl Games, International Games, Scouting Combine and NFL Draft, to support the overall organizational objectives for each respective event.    
  • Lead publicist for the NFL Legends Community and Player Engagement initiatives, developing innovative communications strategies to cover all levels of a player’s football journey.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in a Communications or related field. 
  • At least 10 years of experience with a league, club or in a collegiate athletic communications role.
  • A positive culture-carrier, with the ability to bring people together to achieve a common objective. 
  • The ability to work during all NFL game windows…Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
  • Innovative and strategic, the ability to generate new ideas
  • Leadership and relationship-building skills.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Strong grammatical knowledge.
  • Critical thinking skills.

Salary / Pay Range

The NFL expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials, or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would the NFL consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range. 

Salary

$160,000 - $185,000 USD

This role requires onsite presence at an NFL office or stadium location, and remote and/or hybrid working options are not offered.
